Cool Thanksgiving/Christmas Shopping Facts:

At the start of Franklin Roosevelt's presidency, it was up to the President to announce a Thanksgiving Proclamation and declare the date of the holiday. Thanksgiving was the last Thursday of November as that was the day President Lincoln observed the holiday when he made Thanksgiving a national holiday in 1863. However, Roosevelt found the tradition was difficult to keep in extreme situations - for instance, the Great Depression. His first Thanksgiving in office, 1933, was November 30th, the last day of the month, because November had five Thursdays that year. Statistics showed that most people did not do their Christmas shopping until after Thanksgiving.

Businesses were afraid of losing money, especially during the Depression, as there were only twenty-four shopping days between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Therefore, Roosevelt was asked to move Thanksgiving one week earlier. President Roosevelt ignored the requests in 1933, but when Thanksgiving once again threatened to fall on the last day of November in 1939, Roosevelt reconsidered the request and changed the date of Thanksgiving to one week earlier. Thanksgiving 1939 would be held, President Roosevelt proclaimed, on November 23rd and not November 30th.
